The 9 Main Symptoms of Candida & How to Treat Them

It’s hard to tell if you’ve got Candida or not. That’s why it’s often misdiagnosed & people end up being put on antibiotics again and again.

Based on our 30 years of experience and seeing thousands of people with candida we have noticed these are the 9 major symptoms of Candida:

Let’s go through each one of them and discuss how to deal and get rid of it.

1. Bloating & Gas

This is one of the top symptoms nearly every person with Candida ends up struggling with. Some have it so bad they can’t even put their jeans on!

Bloating happens because of fermentation. As you know, Candida is a yeast & yeast LOVES sugar & sweet foods. And then it consumes this sugar it ferments it and this results in gas buildup and bloating. It’s the reason why fermented drinks such as beer are fizzy and release gases when you open a bottle. The more sugary foods you eat and the more candida you’ve got in your gut, the more you’re going to bloat.

This will happen even with “healthy” foods like sweet potatoes and mango if your candida levels are high enough.

How to Get Rid of With Bloating & Gas
You can eliminate bloating on gas by cutting back on sugary / starchy foods & by taking calmative herbs. These herbs include:

  • Anise seed (not to be confused with star anise)
  • Caraway
  • Dill
  • Fennel
  • Peppermint
  • Spearmint
  • Thyme
  • Ginger
  • Sage
  • Chamomile
  • Gum mastic powder
  • Cinnamon bark

In our opinion, the most effective herbs on this list are anise, ginger, thyme, cinnamon, gum mastic and chamomile. Oh yeah, they feed the bacteria alright. . . They feed everything from the e. coli to the clostridia and all the other bad bacteria that cause bloating, gas and brain fog. Companies will tell you these sugars are from “natural sources” but in reality that “source” is a factory or lab. So make sure your supplements don’t list “prebiotics” on the list of ingredients. 2. Dizziness, Poor Concentration & Brain Fog

When a yeast infection becomes chronic, it can cause poor concentration, decreased memory, mood swings, irritability and brain fog.

That’s because yeast has an effect on the central nervous system. This is largely due to toxins and waste particles Candida releases as it grows and dies. These particles then lodge themselves in different parts of the body and this make you feel quite sick.

There’s also a psychological aspect to it. Severe Candida is hard to get rid of and many people end up having it for years. They’ve been to many doctors and specialists and all of them have said there’s nothing wrong and that they should go see a psychiatrist.

These people lose confidence in themselves. They feel like something is wrong with them.

How to Get Rid of Dizziness, Poor Concentration & Brain Fog
The best ways to combat brain fog and symptoms like dizziness is to take probiotics, lower your sugar consumption and add rosemary to your diet.

Rosemary has a positive effect on mood and cognitive function (particularly memory) which makes it a great herb to use for people who suffer from brain fog & other cognitive symptoms caused by candida overgrowth. It also boosts the immune system & has antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Take rosemary in small amounts (just a pinch is enough) as high doses have been shown to have a temporary negative effect on memory. Another way to combat brain fog is increase your consumption of foods that contain thiamin or vitamin B1 as deficiency is quite common in people with levels of acetaldehyde in their bloodstream (one of the primary causes of brain fog).

A lot of websites say probiotics are the best way to deal with brain fog but you need to be careful. Because if you take the wrong probiotic product it can actually make your brain fog much worse. The way you tell if a probiotic supplement will make your brain fog symptoms worse is by checking if it’s got “prebiotics” or “FOSS” listed in the ingredients. Probioitcs help because (as you’ve likely heard) the gut and brain are connected. They’re connected physically and chemically. As changes to the gut will affect the brain and vice versa. This is due to the vagus nerve, which is a thick pathway in the spinal cord that sends signals between the intestines and brain.

Good bacteria have a huge influence on this and will actually release molecules that carry information to the brain. For example if good bacteria detect high levels of bad bacteria or parasites, they’ll release molecules that quickly tell the brain to send white blood cells to help deal with the infection. Your gut would have noticed this infection eventually anyway but the good bacteria serve as an early warning system.

The amount of sugar you eat and the amount of alcohol you drink also has a large influence on the severity of brain fog and similar symptoms. 3. Cravings For Sweet Foods

One of the obvious signs of Candida is a constant, daily craving for sweet foods.

This could be pastries, cookies, ice cream, anything with sugar. It can also be things like sweet breads of potato chips, especially if you crave these foods after you’ve had a meal. These cravings are the yeast calling out for you to feed it.

Yeast loves sugar as that’s its main food source and the more pastries or starchy foods you eat, the more Candida can grow.

How to Get Rid of Sugar Cravings
The first thing to identify if you’ve got strong cravings is does the food you crave contain a lot of sugar or a lot of salt? The second thing is are you calcium deficient? And the third thing is do you have issues with adrenal fatigue or adrenal problems?

If what you crave are foods like potato fries, chips, pretzels, salted peanuts, it may simply be that you’re not drinking enough water. Water has a very big regulatory effect on the gut. It helps the body immensely to improve  digestion. It also helps a lot with appetite control, believe it or not.

It may also be that you’re calcium deficient. It’s far more common than you think. Calcium’s connection with cravings is very real. We’ve had many people tell me once they started drinking more natural cow’s milk that’s unpasteurized (raw), they notice they don’t crave fries, chips or bread anymore.

Of course you don’t need to drink raw milk if you want to reduce your cravings. Lots of natural foods contain calcium.

If you’ve got strong sugar cravings, try adding stevia and honey to your diet. Even a little bit of honey can be enough to stop you from craving sugar. And the good thing about having a spoon of honey is it doesn’t feed Candida or bad bacteria and it doesn’t cause bloating or gas. And then slowly remove the processed sugar foods out of the diet. After being off of sugar for 6 to 12 months you’ll be shocked by how your taste buds naturally change and how little desire you’ll have for it.

You can also add bitter foods to your diet. Most don’t know this but if you start putting bitter foods in your mouth every day, over a period of several weeks or months, your desire for bitter foods become stronger and stronger and your desire for sweets gets less and less. An easy way to do is to get an herb called gymnema.

This is a very bitter herb. If you want something milder try eating grapefruit or drink unsweetened lemon juice or olives. You can also eat Chinese vegetables like bok choy or Chinese broccoli (normal broccoli is OK too) which is quite bitter. Bitter foods also have a benefit in that they stimulate digestion and inhibit parasites and candida. They improve fermentation and how beneficial bacteria work in your intestine. Many bitter foods also contain starches which feed lactobacillus and bifidobacteria.

You can also get an herbal tincture called Swedish Bitters which you can add to water. It’s very bitter and is supposed to aid in digestion.

The final way to help curb sugar cravings is by taking a Vitamin C supplement. That’s because Vitamin C & sugar have similar chemical structures. They bind to the same receptor sites on your cells & compete with each other for absorption. That means if there’s more Vitamin C in your system, less sugar can get into your cells and vice versa. That’s why studies show taking vitamin C helps curb sugar, alcohol and carbohydrate cravings.

Your body feels satiated by the Vitamin C & you stop craving foods like ice cream & chips after your meal.

Try taking 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C daily if you have strong sugar cravings. You might be quite surprised to find you no longer want that ice cream or cookie after your main meal. Just make sure your vitamin C doesn’t contain any sucrose (sugar), because many do.

4. Vaginal Thrush (or Jock for men)

Vaginal thrush for women & jock itch for men is very common when you’ve got a Candida infection.

Lots of people have contacted us over the years for recurring thrush and jock itch & we’ve made many videos on these topics on our YouTube channel. The big thing with jock itch is personal hygiene. That means regular showering. Lots of sunlight, salt and water also help.

Thrush is a sign that there’s an imbalance in the gut microbiome. Because if your vaginal flora is out of balance or has a yeast problem, so does your gut. Yeast will always migrate from the digestive system to the vagina if given the opportunity. That’s why you need to target your microbiome as a whole and not just focus on the vaginal symptoms.

How to Get Rid of Vaginal Thrush / Jock Itch
There are ways to alleviate symptoms if you’ve got thrush or jock itch really but the issue will always come back later if you don’t remove Candida out of the gut environment and replace it with good bacteria. You have to do both supplements and diet if you want long lasting results. You can’t just take CanXida and eat a poor diet (such as pizza and soda every day) and expect the yeast to go away. It won’t

That being said, there are a few natural ways to lessen the severity of vaginal thrush if you’re dealing it with right now.

One method is to try a yogurt & essential oil douche. This one comes from a book written by Valerie Worwood in 1990. She recommends combining whole milk yogurt containing live acid acidophilus culture and essential oiks (and we’ve found it to be quite effective). To make it, just add the essential oils below to a 100-grams of fresh yogurt. Make sure the yogurt you buy actually says it contains “live cultures” because many brands don’t.

  • German chamomile oil – 5 drops
  • Lavender oil – 5 drops
  • Tea tree oil – 5 drops

Then use either an applicator for inserting pessaries or a tampon applicator. The yogurt mixed with essential oils has a dual action natural antibiotic and antifungal effect. And because it contains natural ingredients, it only targets the yeast while leaving the good bacteria alone.

This method is effective even for chronic cases of vaginal itching and soreness so give it a try.

You can also dilute the yogurt with warm spring water until you have made a thin fluid. Then add the essential oils and you’ve got a natural antifungal and antibacterial solution for washing the vaginal tract twice a day. Another quick remedy is apple cider vinegar which you can use to wash different parts of the body.

5. You Get Sick Often

Many people with severe Candida will get sick often. They can get the flu more often. They may have allergy problems like asthma or other health issues that appear unrelated to Candida.

This is because Candida affects the immune system. It does this on multiple levels.

Candida is a very clever organism. It can evade capture. It can cripple the immune system. It can cause upregulation of the immune system and downregulation. It can shift your immune system depending on what’s most beneficial for it at the time. It does this is by influencing the gut. Candida can affect what’s called the vagus nerve. This is a powerful nerve that connects not only your digestive system, but also your heart, lungs, and other organs. It also connects to the limbic system which is a part of the brain.

That’s why when you’ve got a severe yeast infection, your whole body feels out of whack. You feel sick and you don’t know why. You may even have joint pain and ringing in your ears and other health problems & feel like your body is just falling apart.

Recovery takes longer when you have a weakened immune system. Especially if you’ve been sick for a long time because then your immune system gets burned out. You can tell this by looking at your symptoms. A tell-tale sign is recurring mouth yeast infection or a white tongue. Another is skin issues. The more the problem has spread beyond the gut & is wrecking havoc to other areas, the more your immune system has been overrun & needs help.

How to Help Your Immune System Combat Candida
The first thing to check for if you get sick often is check your cortisol levels. This can tell you a little about your adrenal and thyroid health.

The next thing to check is your sleeping patterns and your work patterns. You then want to check what stresses you’ve got in your life. Have you been on antibiotics for a long period of time recently? All this can influence your health.

6. Diarrhea & Constipation

If you’ve had Candida for a while, you’ve probably got digestion issues that include having constipation and / or diarrhea more often then you’d like.

Some days you may go to the toilet normally, other days you can’t. Some days you may have really loose stool in the morning and then in the evening they can’t pass anything out at all.

Maybe you’ve been to a GI specialist already and they said you’ve got IBS. IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is what we call a garbage-can diagnosis. It’s where doctors lump you into when they have NO IDEA what’s wrong and don’t want to perform any more tests.

If you suffer from either of these problems on a regular basis, the most important advice we can give you is to go get a stool test done. Get what’s called a Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis or CDSA x3. Because often times when a person is really unwell it’s a sign that there’s multiple problems in the gut that need fixing. It could be that you have high levels of Candida with a moderate level of a parasite like blastocystis.

It could be that you have a low Candida count but high levels of a bad bacteria like Citrobacter.

It could that you have high levels of Candida & very low levels of beneficial bacteria (a pattern we have seen quite often). You need to find out. Don’t just assume these problems are because of yeast and focus only on Candida.

How to Get Rid of Diarrhea & Constipation
In most cases recurring diarrhea and / or constipation is the result of a food sensitivity. This can be solved by shifting to an anti-candida diet which eliminates most foods people react to.

If you’ve already tried eliminating foods and had no results, try to think back to what might have happened to trigger this problem. Did the problem start after you ate something that seemed off?  Perhaps during a trip or a vacation? Often times this can be triggered by food poisoning. Which you may have partially recovered from after using antibiotics or other drugs.

In general, the best advice we can give you if you’re suffering with severe diarrhea and constipation is simplify your diet to just a handful of different foods, take a gut cleaning formula like CanXida Remove, a probiotic like CanXida Restore and look into getting a stool test done (particularly if you’ve had the issues for a while.

7. Fatigue & Low Energy

Fatigue is common symptom of many different issues and not just Candida.

In fact it’s so common that doctors are sick and tired of hearing the word “fatigue.” Our friend Dr. James Wilson, an expert on adrenal fatigue, once said to us “Don’t go to a doctor and tell him you’re tired.” The doctors response will be “Go away and send me someone who’s really sick!” Nearly everyone is fatigued or tired these days to some degree. It’s almost becoming normal.

There are two different types of fatigue you may suffer from if you have Candida.

It could be weakness where you’re finding it difficult to pick objects up. You may have trouble walking up stairs or hills or lack stability. It could be fatigue in that you’re always tired and want to sleep.

Tiredness, meaning you want to sleep often and don’t have the energy to do everyday things, is often a sign that you have low (or none in many cases) levels of beneficial bacteria in the gut. We find this regularly with patients who’ve been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

It can also be because of nutrient deficiencies like potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium. These four minerals are key if you want to have energy and not feel weak. Having a strong digestive system to key too. Often times we’ve seen people who were deficient in these minerals even though they were eating healthy food and taking multivitamins.

And that’s because they lacked sufficient levels of good bacteria in their gut to break these foods down and absorb them. Other times it was because they had a parasite problem that was gobbling these minerals up.

How to Banish Fatigue and Increase Your Energy Levels
Chronic fatigue is the result of a poor lifestyle and a breakdown of your hormonal and immune health over a period of many, many years.

And after seeing hundreds of cases, the biggest pattern we see is a background of high stress. It could be a stressful job. Stressful relationships. It could be staying up too late or too long. Bad sleep patterns often underpin chronic fatigue as well.

One way to figure out what’s underpinning the fatigue is checking your blood tests over a prolonged period of time. You want to look for signs of low grade inflammation. This can show up in the form of elevated C reactive protein, low vitamin B12, low vitamin D, problems with white blood cell counts such as lower then normal white blood cells. Another marker that can be the cause of fatigue is elevated eosinophil. Whatever it is, look for a pattern that spans several years.

8. Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a very common sign of Candida.

It’s a huge problem for a lot of people. So huge that there’s TV commercials in many countries for treatments targeting toenail fungus.

In our experience, people with recurring toenail fungus usually have got gastrointestinal yeast infections. Don’t kid yourself for a minute that you only have toenail fungus and no fungus in other parts of your body like your gut. It doesn’t work that way.

Just like with thrush & jock itch, you need to target the Candida in the gut if you want the fungus to go away and stop recurring.

How to Get Rid of Toenail Fungus For Good
Topical treatments purely on the nail are a waste of time. You’re wasting your time just putting over the counter pharmaceuticals on your toenail or trying to treat the nail externally without looking at the internal contributing factors. You may get rid of it for a while, but it’ll usually come back again. If you want to get rid of it permanently, you need to make changes on multiple levels.

One big issue is keeping your feed dry and walking barefoot as much as possible. If you work 8 hours a day in an office though we understand this can be hard. Remember, fungus likes moisture and darkness. If your feet get sweaty, dry to dry them off every few hours. Change your socks multiple times a day if you have to.

Getting processed sugar and alcohol out of the diet also helps but it can take several months to see the results if that’s all you do.

Natural treatment is more effective then pharmaceuticals when it comes to getting rid of toenail fungus. That’s because while fungus can eventually develop a resistance to drug remedies, it cannot do this with natural antifungals. The 4 natural remedies that work best are direct sunlight exposure, salt water, tea tree oil and oregano oil.

For direct sunlight, even 30 minutes a day helps. If its cold were you live, put your feet near the window so that light hits it. Soak your feet in salt water for 20 to 30 minutes when you get home from work. Rub tea tree oil or oregano oil on your feet. Oregano oil is a bit more powerful then tea tree oil but sometimes you need powerful treatments like that if the infection is really bad.

One drop of oil on each affected nail is enough. Cut the nail very short and get the oil around the nail margin. One drop on each nail once a day is enough.

Try it out but make sure you’re also working on your internal environment at the same time. Combine this with a yeast cleansing oral supplement like CanXida Remove (RMV) and make some dietary changes. That’s how you get rid of toenail fungus and keep it from coming back. It can take 3 to 6 months but it works.

9. Rashes and Skin Problems

We’ve never met a person with beautiful skin who didn’t have great gut health.

We’ve also found that the worse the skin problem a patient had, the worse shape their gut was in & the more Candida, bad bacteria, or parasites they had. This goes for acne, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and many other skin conditions.

Many of these skin conditions have been linked in various studies with small intestinal dysfunction. That’s because the small intestine is where low level inflammation starts in the body before it spreads.

The small intestine can be a hot bed or breeding ground for many different types of bad bacteria and yeast which in turn produce toxins and immune debris. These then travel throughout the body causing inflammation wherever they land.

These particles can end up anywhere. They can end up on your face, around your belly, or on your back and legs.

Remember the word inflammation when you think about skin problems. It’s an inflammatory condition & the only way you’re going to get rid of it permanently is by cleaning up your gut and getting the “bad guys” out of there.

How to Get Rid of Skin Issues Caused to Candida
There’s lots of topical remedies that can help with skin issues like itching (the best of which is tea tree oil). These remedies are temporary however unless we also treat your internal gut environment by relieving the inflammation and by getting the yeast and bad bacteria that’s causing the inflammation in the first place out of there.

Make sure you also take a probiotic as beneficial bacteria also play a big role here. There’s no point getting rid of Candida using diet and supplements if you don’t take a good probiotic to keep that yeast from getting back. Otherwise you’ll just get sick again later down the road.
